Funding Future Ministry– Diocesan Stewardship Day
by C Wills
Diocesan Planned Giving committee member Suzan Anderson, a retired estate planning attorney and member of St. Elizabeth’s, Roanoke, gave a presentation about endowment funds to participants at the second Stewardship Development Institute.
The event, held August 16 at Phoebe Needles Center, was designed to give parish leaders more tools for their toolbox in support of stewardship ministry.Last year, national Episcopal stewardship guru Terry Parsons gave the keynote address for the event. This year, the theme was “Building Households of Faith — Stewardship is a Family Affair.”
Clergy and lay leaders from 13 parishes in all five convocations of the diocese previewed the “Financial Sanity” curriculum from Share-Save-Spend, one of the nation’s leading organizations in helping families develop healthy money habits. The curriculum is a four-part series with a biblical grounding that encourages intergenerational discussion about values and money. It explores questions such as “If you were given $200 with no strings attached, what would you do with it?” and “How would you describe the most generous person you know?” The creator of the series, Nathan Dungan, wrote “Prodigal Sons and Material Girls: How Not To Be Your Child’s ATM” in 2003.
In the afternoon, participants joined small groups to explore the biblical underpinnings of stewardship, stewardship for all ages and stewardship ideas that work.
Next year’s SDI is expected to be held at about the same time of year and will explore capital campaigns and the stewardship of grounds and buildings. //
